The South Tyrolean saga of King Laurin is part of a popular tradition in the Dolomites. It is an explanation of the optical phenomenon of Alpenglow, by which the mountain crests change their colour to shades of red and purple during and after sunset. King Laurin’s legend is also considered to be the source of the German name of the Rosengarten group (Eng. rose garden) between South Tyrol and the Trentino. King Laurin turned his rose garden into stone, after being trapped and captured for his love.
