Alaïa Spring 2027 Proves the House Is Bigger Than One Designer
Alaïa’s first collection following Pieter Mulier’s departure did not chase a dramatic reinvention. Instead, the house’s studio used Spring 2027 to show just how much power already exists inside the Alaïa vocabulary.
Fashion loves a changing of the guard, particularly when it comes with a blockbuster appointment, an instant aesthetic overhaul and enough spectacle to manufacture a new era overnight. Alaïa took another route for Spring 2027. With Pieter Mulier having departed the house, the internal studio presented the collection without a newly installed creative director, allowing the clothes—and the institutional knowledge behind them—to do the talking.
That decision made the collection particularly revealing. Alaïa returned to the former Fondation Cartier building on Boulevard Raspail, where models moved through an environment of curved screens and projected imagery. The presentation was comparatively restrained, but the clothes were anything but anonymous. Familiar Alaïa signatures appeared immediately: sharply controlled Spencer jackets, leather skater skirts built around movement, fitted knit dresses and silhouettes engineered closely around the body.
What made Spring 2027 interesting was not an attempt to erase what came before, but the subtle recalibration of those codes. A burgundy leather coat used pin-tucked construction through the waist to suggest a built-in bustier, while jersey dresses and skirts were rolled and lifted around the hips, creating unexpected volume before opening into generous slits. The effect brought sensuality through construction rather than decoration—a principle deeply connected to the way Alaïa has historically treated the body.
There was also something strategically smart about the restraint. Fashion houses in transition often feel pressure to prove that a completely new chapter has begun. Alaïa instead demonstrated the value of continuity. Its atelier, pattern cutters, knit specialists and internal design team carry a technical language that does not disappear when one creative director leaves. The collection made that infrastructure visible without turning the transition itself into a marketing gimmick.
That does not mean the question of Alaïa’s future has disappeared. The industry will continue watching to see how the house ultimately structures its creative leadership. But Spring 2027 makes the conversation more interesting. The collection suggests that Alaïa may not need to rush toward a celebrity appointment simply to create momentum. A house with codes this recognizable has the luxury of deciding carefully what comes next.
For now, Spring 2027 succeeds because it understands what Alaïa already possesses: a disciplined relationship between clothing and the body, technical confidence, sensuality without excess and an atelier capable of translating those ideas without losing their clarity. This was not fashion shouting about a new beginning. It was a house quietly demonstrating that its identity is strong enough to survive one.

WWD describes the presentation as Alaïa’s first runway collection following Mulier’s exit and reports that the house is relying on its atelier and internal design talent while determining its next creative configuration. Vogue likewise identifies Spring 2027 as studio-designed and credits the collection imagery to Alaïa. Head Topics
