Yohji Yamamoto and Danh Vo Honored with the 2026 Isamu Noguchi Award

The intersection of fashion, contemporary art, and cultural expression took center stage in New York as legendary Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Vietnamese-born conceptual artist Danh Vo were recognized with the 2026 Isamu Noguchi Award. Presented during The Noguchi Museum’s annual benefit on October 6, the distinction celebrates creative figures whose work reflects the experimental spirit and artistic innovation of Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi.

Yamamoto, celebrated for his avant-garde silhouettes, unconventional tailoring, and enduring influence on international fashion, has spent decades challenging traditional ideas of beauty and design. His work shares Noguchi’s fascination with form, material, and the relationship between artistic expression and everyday life. Vo, whose conceptual installations examine identity, migration, memory, and cultural history, approaches art through an equally unconventional perspective, transforming historical objects and personal narratives into powerful visual statements.

The ceremony also coincided with the 75th anniversary of Noguchi’s iconic Akari light sculptures, reinforcing the museum’s commitment to preserving a legacy that continues to influence contemporary creativity. By honoring Yamamoto and Vo, The Noguchi Museum celebrates the enduring connection between artistic disciplines and the visionaries who refuse to be confined by them.
