Ralph Lauren Spring 2027 Makes Romance a Little Less Polished

Nearly 60 years after establishing one of American fashion’s most recognizable worlds, Ralph Lauren is still finding new combinations inside it.

Ralph Lauren did not wait for the official New York Fashion Week calendar to begin.

On September 9, the designer presented his Spring 2027 women’s collection at Jack Shainman Gallery in downtown Manhattan, one day before NYFW’s official September 10 opening. It was the house’s third show in the space, but this time the gallery’s bright architecture was allowed to do much of the talking: a restrained setting for clothes built around contrast.

Lauren described the collection as an “irreverent take on romance.” That description matters because Spring 2027 did not approach romance through sweetness alone. Instead, femininity collided with menswear; ornate fabrics met utility clothing; polished tailoring sat beside ripped denim.

Romance, According to Ralph

White and navy formed much of the collection’s foundation, joined by camel, metallics and washes of softer color. Voluminous trousers appeared with narrow jackets and elongated waistcoats. Corset-like construction met simple pants. Brocade, velvet and feathered surfaces were deliberately grounded with clothing that felt considerably more ordinary.

One denim workwear jacket arrived edged with white feathers. Distressed jeans appeared beneath richly decorated layers. Elsewhere, eveningwear became fluid and sensual through draped silhouettes, open backs, shimmering surfaces and sheer fabrication.

That tension—rugged against refined—has long belonged to the Ralph Lauren universe. Spring 2027 simply pushed the conversation further.

An Archive That Still Moves

There were direct acknowledgments of Lauren’s history.

A dramatically oversized tie referenced the four-inch-wide ties that helped launch his career in 1967. Tailoring also revisited one of the designer’s most enduring contributions to womenswear: sharply cut suiting informed by men’s construction.

But the important distinction is that Spring 2027 did not present those references as museum pieces.

The tie landed beside faded denim. Formal jackets appeared with relaxed bottoms. Dresses and trousers occupied the same look. Historic shapes were stretched, shortened, loosened or deliberately disrupted.

For PMG, that may be the real story of this collection: Ralph Lauren is approaching 60 years not by trying to escape the codes that made the company famous, but by showing how much room still exists inside them.

The Value of the Hand

There was also considerable attention given to surface and craft.

Silks and lamés were treated to create aged or irregular finishes, while organza, beadwork, embroidery and other manipulated surfaces kept the collection from feeling overly pristine. Vogue noted hand-painted and burnout techniques used to create patina across several pieces.

In a fashion environment increasingly surrounded by digital perfection, the irregularity is important. The appeal comes partly from seeing evidence of process—the sense that a surface has been touched, altered or allowed to retain character.

It also fits the collection’s larger argument: elegance does not necessarily require perfection.

Nearly 60 Years of Ralph

Ralph Lauren founded his business in 1967. Spring 2027 therefore arrives on the doorstep of its 60th anniversary, and some reflection is inevitable.

Yet nostalgia was not allowed to overwhelm the runway. Lauren’s familiar language—Americana, tailoring, denim, glamour, prep and evening dressing—was present, but the styling continually resisted the idea that those categories needed to remain separate.

Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Elizabeth Debicki, Ariana DeBose, Rachel Brosnahan and other guests joined the front row, while Ricky Lauren, the designer’s wife and longtime muse, was also present and joined him at the show’s conclusion.

That ending made the collection’s romantic theme feel slightly more personal. After almost six decades, Ralph Lauren does not need to explain what Ralph Lauren looks like. Spring 2027 asked the more interesting question: how many different ways can you wear it?
