Bentley introduces its first all-new model line in a decade, bringing the marque’s century-old approach to craftsmanship and performance into a new electric era.
Bentley has pulled back the silk on the Bentley Torcal, introducing a new model that represents one of the most significant additions to the British marque’s contemporary portfolio.
The Torcal becomes Bentley’s fourth modern model line, joining the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga. More significantly, it is the company’s first completely new model line in a decade and signals how Bentley intends to translate its established codes of luxury, craftsmanship and performance for the electric age.
Bentley describes the Torcal as combining a progressive new aesthetic rooted in the company’s historic design DNA with new connectivity, intelligent passenger-wellbeing technologies and the craftsmanship long associated with its cars.
A Name Shaped by the Landscape
Even the name deliberately connects to ideas of strength and movement. Torcal takes its inspiration from El Torcal de Antequera, the extraordinary limestone landscape in Andalusia, Spain. Formed over millions of years, the region is known for its monumental rock formations, cliffs and natural labyrinths.
Bentley says the word “Torcal” also shares the same root as “torque,” connecting the name to the twisting forces of wind that helped shape the landscape and, symbolically, to the performance character of the vehicle itself.
It is a fitting reference for a model intended to balance a new identity with Bentley’s established character.
Bentley Craftsmanship Enters a New Era
The transition to electric power does not mean abandoning the sensory qualities Bentley has spent more than a century developing.
The company is placing craftsmanship at the center of the Torcal experience, introducing new materials and finishes while retaining the hand-finished approach associated with its Crewe-built vehicles. Bentley is also rethinking something more unexpected: sound.
Rather than relying on a generic synthesized electric-vehicle soundtrack, Bentley developed the Torcal’s sonic character using recordings of real instruments, including drums, viola and bass guitar.
The development team studied the rhythm and emotional qualities of Bentley’s combustion engines, including its V8, before working with musicians to create an original acoustic identity designed to respond to the driver’s inputs.
The objective is not to imitate an internal-combustion engine. Instead, Bentley is attempting to preserve some of the emotional connection between driver and machine as its technology changes.
A Fourth Bentley
The Torcal expands Bentley beyond the familiar Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga families.
That makes the vehicle more than another derivative of an existing Bentley. It establishes an entirely new pillar within the company’s portfolio and gives the marque a platform designed specifically around its next generation of luxury automobiles.
For Bentley, the Torcal represents a bridge between two eras: the traditions that have defined the company since 1919 and a new approach to performance, technology and luxury shaped around electrification. The silk has now been pulled back. Bentley’s next chapter has a name.
