Longines’ relationship with aviation stretches back nearly a century, long before the pilot watch became a modern style category. With the Spirit Pilot and Spirit Pilot Flyback, the Swiss watchmaker returns to that history with two references that feel deliberately more focused: smaller cases, highly legible dials, and mechanical movements designed around precision and practicality.
Introduced in 2025 as an expansion of the Longines Spirit collection, the two watches share the visual language of classic aviation instruments while taking distinctly different mechanical approaches.
The Spirit Pilot Keeps It Simple
The Longines Spirit Pilot arrives in a 39 mm stainless-steel case, giving the watch a restrained presence that works as easily outside the cockpit as it would have inside one.
Its matte dial, oversized Arabic numerals and luminous hands prioritize readability, while the clean case proportions keep the watch from feeling oversized or overly technical.
Inside is a self-winding mechanical movement fitted with a monocrystalline silicon balance spring and offering up to 72 hours of power reserve. The movement is chronometer-certified by the COSC, reinforcing the collection’s emphasis on accuracy.
The Spirit Pilot is also water-resistant to 10 bar, or approximately 100 meters, and protected by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment.
Depending on the reference, Longines offers the model with black or blue dial treatments and a selection of leather, rubber and stainless-steel bracelet configurations.
Spirit Pilot Flyback Adds the Complication
The Spirit Pilot Flyback takes the concept further. Its stainless-steel case measures 39.5 mm and incorporates a bidirectional rotating ceramic bezel, giving the watch a more technical profile without returning to the larger dimensions often associated with modern aviation chronographs.
The biggest difference, however, is mechanical. Rather than using an automatic movement, the Flyback is powered by a manually wound mechanical calibre with approximately 68 hours of power reserve. It is also COSC-certified and uses a silicon balance spring.
The flyback chronograph allows the wearer to stop, reset and restart the chronograph in a single action rather than completing those operations separately. Historically, that made the function particularly useful for timing successive stages of a flight.
A Complication With History
The flyback function is especially important to Longines because the brand’s involvement with the complication stretches back to the early 1930s. Longines states that it introduced its first flyback-equipped model during that period and secured a patent for the technology on June 16, 1936.
That history gives the Spirit Pilot Flyback more substance than a purely vintage-inspired design exercise. The complication is not simply being borrowed from aviation history; it represents a technology with which Longines has a documented historical connection.
Smaller Cases, Stronger Identity
Perhaps the most significant element of these watches is their sizing.
At 39 mm and 39.5 mm, the Spirit Pilot and Spirit Pilot Flyback move away from the oversized proportions that defined many pilot watches for years. Instead, Longines keeps the familiar Arabic numerals, luminous detailing and instrument-inspired character while placing them into cases that feel noticeably more versatile.
